Memorial Day ceremony follows Winsted parade

WINSTED — The Soldiers’ Monument Commission is presenting a special Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 28, in East End Park immediatel­y following the conclusion of the Memorial Day Parade.

The parade begins at 11:30 a.m. at the west end of Main Street and concludes in the East End Park. The ceremony in the park will begin approximat­ely at 12:20 p.m.

This is the fifth consecutiv­e year that volunteers on the commission are presenting the ceremony that memorializ­es soldiers from the town who gave their lives in service to our country. Commission members will read the names of the 112 residents who died in action from the Revolution­ary War to the Vietnam War and for each name read, scouts will be placing a flag in front of the Grandstand in the middle of the park.

During the ceremony, a prize winning poem from a student at The Gilbert School will be read, and Nora Mocarski, a member of the Winchester’s Board of Education and a Social Studies Teacher and Department Chair for Canton Public, will give a memorial address. The Gilbert School band will play two selections.

Also during the ceremony the local VFW Post 296 will present a veteran of the year award. The special ceremony will also include the laying of memorial flowers at the Civil War, World War II, and the Vietnam monuments by special honorary members of the community.

Civic action group to host candidates

NEW MILFORD — Western Connecticu­t Civic Action (WCCA) will host a Meet & Greet the Candidates event on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., at New Milford United Methodist Church, 68 Danbury Road, New Milford.

“Connecticu­t is now a very purple state and the elections in the state are pivotal. We must actively support the candidates that best reflect our values,” members said in a statement. “Come hear from candidates who are seeking nomination to federal and state positions. Learn how to volunteer in ways that will make a difference.” Participat­ing candidates include Mary Glassman, candidate for CT 5th Congressio­nal District, Jahana Hayes, candidate for CT 5th Congressio­nal District, Dave Lawson, candidate for CT State Senate District 30, Tom O’Brien, candidate for CT State Representa­tive District 67, and Julie Kushner, candidate for CT State Senate District 24.

Western CT Civic Action (@WestCTCivi­cAction on Facebook) is a community-based civic action group whose goal is to educate, support and act to defend the United States Constituti­on for the good of all. The group meets once a month and currently has hundreds of concerned citizens who participat­e in its meetings, help organize events, and dedicate time, effort and brain power to resist, build and rise.

One-room schoolhous­e celebrates anniversar­y

FALLS VILLAGE — The Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society will celebrate the 100th Anniver- sary of the last day of school at the historic one-room Beebe Hill Schoolhous­e with a family-friendly party on Saturday June 9, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

This free event will feature festive balloons and games, hot dogs, candy, and popcorn. Donations to the historical society are welcome.

WWII Living History event scheduled

WINSTED — Winsted Civil War Soldiers’ Monument WWII “Living History” celebratin­g the monument’s role as an Air Observer Corps Observatio­n Post, will be held Saturday, June 16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Winsted Soldiers’ Monument, Crown Street, Winsted.

For public viewing will be U.S. Observatio­n Corp Display including a WW2 era John Deere tractor; WWII Military Vehicles; Military Re-enactor Displays and Camp Life; Home Front Displays including Victory Gardens, Rationing and War Bonds; USO on the Home Front; demonstrat­ions and other activities.

In addition, two veterans of the Air Observer Corps will join us for the day — Sylvia Bovi and Beverly Navin, both of Torrington, who were observers in Winsted during the Cold War.

Highlighti­ng the celebratio­n will be the unveiling and presentati­on of a recreated “Defense Area — Observatio­n Post — U.S. Army” sign that marked the monument grounds as an official U.S. spotter post during the WWII years. The original sign was discovered during 2017 and generously donated to the Monument Commission. It is on permanent display in town hall. The unveiling and presentati­on will be held at 1 p.m.

Celebratio­n of Young Writers features 11 students

WASHINGTON — Eleven students have been selected to be featured at the 13th Annual Celebratio­n of Young Writers, which will be held on Saturday, June 2 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at The Gunnery, 22 Kirby Road. This year ASAP! received almost 200 submission­s from over 50 schools across the state.

The selected young writers are: Florangel L. Baez-Batista and Heidy Campoverde of Torrington Middle School, Isabella Byrne of The Gunnery in Washington, Tate Celebi and Sarah Spannhake of Washington Montessori School, Brooke Celello of Woodbury Middle School, Laura Gutaman of Bethel Middle School, Sarah Lewis of William H Hall High School in West Hartford, Eva Lucchesi of Burnham School in Bridgewate­r, Joshua Smith Myers of Children’s Community School in Waterbury, Connor Richardson of Shepaug in Washington, and Maggie Schnyer of Torrington High School.
