Women featured in abstract show opens May 31
Japanese-influenced exhibit by Raimi Slater also to run through July 7
TORRINGTON — Five Points Gallery, at 33 Main St. in downtown Torrington, will open two concurrent shows, “Rikyu-CHA” and “No Man’s Land: Women and Abstraction,” that will run from May 31 through July 7.
“Rikyu-CHA,” a solo exhibition of Raimi Slater’s small, exquisite paintings, will be in the TDP gallery. Influenced by Japanese philosophies and working within a minute, six-inch-square for-mat, Slater found freedom in the confines of space. She describes her gouache pieces as “ab-stract layers of green light hemmed in by opaque black space.”
In the East and West galleries, “No Man’s Land: Women and Abstraction,” is a group show. Historically, recognized abstract artists predominantly have been men; in this exhibit, Five Points has turned the tables and chosen women as the featured artists. Their works include paintings, drawings, sculpture, constructions, and printmaking.
The artists’ subject matter and their artistic expression of it runs from war memorials made of glass as a fragile/strong metaphor for life, to intricately sewn bold and colorful abstract designs, to Petri dishes and wrinkled vellum evoking science and the topography of the brain.
The eight artists in the group show are Harriet Caldwell, Susan Hackett, Lyn Horton, Rose-mary Laser, Xanda McCagg, Laura Mosquera, Julie Shapiro and Kate Ten Eyck. (Sadly, Rosemary Laser passed away recently; we are honoring her memory by exhibiting the work she created for this exhibition.)
Five Points Gallery will hold two events in conjunction with the exhibitions: an opening recep-tion on Friday, June 1, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and an artists’ Panel Discussion in the gallery on Friday, June 22, at 6:30 p.m. Gallery hours are Thursdays through Mondays, 1 p.m.-5 p.m., and by appointment. There is no admission charge. Five Points exhibitions and educational events are free and open to the public.
The exhibition is sponsored by CVS Health Foundation.
