TAG SALE FOR CHRISTMAS FOR CHILDREN: A tag sale to support the Torrington Fire Department’s Christmas for Children toy drive will be held Saturday, June 9, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Stables Tavern, 179 Washington Ave, Torrington. MUSIC FESTIVAL: Region 10’s annual Johnnycake Mountain Music Festival will be held Saturday, June 9, at Johnnycake Mountain Farm, Burlington, with local bands starting at 3 p.m. Hosted by the Burlington Lions Club to benefit the Region 10 enrichment fund, the event will have open chess games, a bounce house and games with food avaialble for purchase or bring a picnic. GEMS, JEWELRY, MINERAL SHOW: The 16th Annual Gem, Jewelry, and Mineral Show will be held on Saturday June 9, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. rain or shine on the museum grounds of the Connecticut Antique Machinery Association, one mile north of Kent, CT on Route 7 (31 Kent-Cornwall Road). OPEN HOUSE DAY: In celebration of Connecticut Open House Day, an annual event scheduled the second Saturday of June, admission to the Institute of American Indian Studies, 38 Curtis Road, Washington, is free.

Admission $10 per unit for the 2 days; $30 fee to set up a flea market/swap meet space for the 2 days (insurance is not required). HISTORY MUSEUM: Torrington History Museum participates in CT Open House Day Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. with free admission to its award-winning exhibit about the history of Torrington. The exhibit occupies approximately 1,000 square feet and displays hundreds of photographs and objects that tell the story of Torrington
STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL: The Torrington Arts & Culture Commission, in partnership with the Torrington Park and Recreation Department presents “A Saturday in the Park” featuring the first annual “Torrington Strawberry Festival” Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Rain date June 10. WETLANDS WALK: Residents are invited to join the Minor Memorial Library, the Roxbury Land Trust, and the Roxbury Conservation Commission in a trail walk at the River Road Preserve, seeking out wetlands and noting the different soil types that lie adjacent to the Shepaug River. The walk will be led by Bill Moorhead on Sunday, at 2 p.m. Attendees should gather at the River Road parking area of the Roxbury Land Trust. The program, funded through a grant from the Connecticut Community Foundation, is open to all ages. STORYTELLER, GRAND OPENING: Todd Bol, creator and executive eirector of littlefreelibrary.org, is the featured storyteller on Sunday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Pearly’s Farmhouse Café holds a grand opening of a unique little free library inside the restaurant at 421 Sharon Goshen Turnpike, West Cornwall. Activities include stone painting, bookmark-making, a seed exchange, face painting of favorite fictional characters, snacks and singalong.
COMMUNITY COLLEGE TALK: The Winsted Community Bookstore, 414 Main Street, Winsted presents “Community Colleges in Jeopardy: What is the Future of NCCC?” Saturday at 11 a.m. All are invited to a discussion of the recent plan to consolidate the community colleges into one statewide college, with Central Connecticut State University Philosophy Professor David Blitz and Community Lawyer Charlene LaVoie, both of whom actively oppose the state plan to consolidate the community colleges.
LAUREL PARADE: The Winsted Laurel Festival Parade begins Sunday at 1 p.m. Meadow Street and ends at East End Park where the 2018 Laurel King and Queen will be crowned. Participants in the parade include the Connecticut Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps as well as The Waterbury Pipes and Drums. All past royalty, dating back to 1934, have bee invited to be part of a Past Queens Float, as well as a future royalty float, local bands and civic groups. All are invited to the park for the crowning of this year’s
King and Queen.
