Democrats to honor service-minded citizens Opiate Awareness Community Resource Fair and Vigil
WINCHESTER — The Winchester Democratic Town Committee has selected its 2018 award recognition recipients. This awards program honors those that have made significant contributions to the community through their service and work.
Milly Hudak will receive the Anna Harding Community Service Award for her continued service to the community, through her various positions now and throughout the years on the Winchester Historical Society, Auxiliary Health, and as Winsted Town Historian.
Jim Divita will be the recipient of the Jose Cevallos Youth Service Award for his many years of serving local youth, as Recreation Commission member, chairman and coach. Phillip Allen will receive the Joseph Barber Citizenship Award for his many service projects and board affiliations. Astrid Robitaille will receive the John Groppo Good Government Award for her work as a former registrar and other committees and projects.
The award ceremony will take place Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, and an awards program beginning at 7:30 p.m. It will be held at the Indian Mountain Estates (formerly The Knights of Columbus) 122 Marshall St., Winsted.

‘A Walk in the Woods’ is fundraiser is set
LITCHFIELD — The Torrington Area Parkinson’s Support Group will host its seventh annual “Walk in the Woods” for Parkinson’s at White Memorial Conservation Center, Route 202 in Litchfield on Aug. 26. Registration begins at noon. The walk steps off at 1 p.m. along three routes of .5 to 2-miles. Proceeds from the event will benefit area people with Parkinson’s disease and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Research, which strives to improve treatments and find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
Walk in the Woods donations may be made directly to the Michael J. Fox Foundation online at https://fundraise.michaeljfox.org/ tf-2018/tapsg TAPSG hopes to raise $25,000 for research and local programming for PD patients, to elevate community awareness of Parkinson’s disease and to provide an afternoon of exercise, entertainment and outdoor fun at the beautiful White Memorial Conservation Center. Families may picnic on the grounds throughout the afternoon. Local talent, family activities, baked goods and ticketed drawings will be on-site along with the Forbes Flyers precision jump rope team, Litchfield Fire Department, and a face-painting booth.
Painting club to meet
NEW HARTFORD — Shades of Northwest Hills Decorative Painting Club will meet on Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the South End Firehouse on Antolini Road in New Hartford.
Club member Patty Murphy will present a program on painting on glass bottles. She will provide the enamel paints, alcohol wipes to prep the bottles for painting, photos and samples for painting inspiration. The club will furnish the lights to put into the bottles. Interested painters should bring their usual painting supplies and a bottle or two.

TORRINGTON — The Litchfield County Opiate Task Force will hold the second annual Community Resource Fair and Vigil on Friday, August 31st, in Coe Park, downtown Torrington beginning at 5 p.m.
This free event is open to all members of the community and will give attendees an opportunity to come together and honor the memory and commemorate the lives of those lost to opioid overdose and addiction. Attendees can also learn about available local resources, offer and share support to help those affected, and hear inspiring music and messages of hope and encouragement from those in recovery.
There will be educational information booths and refreshments from 5 to 7 PM with representatives from Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, McCall Center for Behavioral Health, Greenwoods Counseling, Authentic Recovery, Home Visiting Family Services, Family Strides, ED Advance, Key Recovery, All About You, Tides of Mind, Western CT MHN, Nurturing Families, and more.
Beginning at 7 p.m., a traditional vigil will begin featuring speakers, music, prayer and meditation, and a candle lighting ceremony at the conclusion of the evening.
Many organizations and town agencies took part in providing the planning, refreshments and funding for the vigil, including the City of Torrington, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, McCall Center for Behavioral Health, and other members of the Litchfield County Opiate Task Force. The Task Force recently published a resource guide detailing treatment options, locations and contact information for area detox centers, outpatient drug therapy, residential programs and medication assisted programs. Child care center hosting mystery dinner
CANAAN — Canaan Child Care Center is hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner, “Murder Amongst the Leaf Peepers”, at the Canaan Country Club, on Sept. 29, 6 p.m.
Guests can enjoy a buffet dinner while gathering clues to solve the murder for a chance to win a prize. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased in advance by calling Fran Chapell at 860-824-0597. All proceeds will benefit the accredited School Readiness Program.
Pie fundraiser under way
CANAAN — Canaan Child Care Center is having its Annual Lyman Orchard Pie Fundraiser. Orders may be placed until Sept. 24, and will be delivered frozen on Nov. 9, just in time for holiday baking.
