The Register Citizen (Torrington, CT)

A world of acronyms

- JOANN RYAN

It’s almost the COB. IMHO, I learned PDQ that NMJ is not in the COC vocabulary. Rather, it’s WOW!, CETC, BAH, NCCC, CBIA, NWRWIB and CIT. OJT taught me that the CEO’s and CFO’s expect BFCE. There’s no toleration for ADP, LIFO or FIFO. EI, RFT and TEI are essential. It’s a WIP because we exhibit PTO.

OK! So you think I flipped out! I guess the heat has gotten to me. You do have to admit that we live in a world of acronyms. They sometimes can be confusing, and maybe even annoying. On the other hand, occasionally, they are right on target. So as not to bewilder you any longer, here’s the translation, thanks to a former staff member who found a list on line created by John Grout:

“It’s almost the close of business. In my humble opinion, I learned pretty darn quick that “not my job” is not in the Chamber of Commerce vocabulary. Rather, it’s the WOW! Forum, Connecticut Employment and Training Commission, Business After Hours, NW CT Community College, CT Business and Industry Association, NW Regional Workforce Investment Board and Chamber Insurance Trust.

On the job training (as if I didn’t already know this) taught me that the Chief Executive Officers and Chief Financial Officers expect Better, Faster, Cheaper, Easier. There’s no toleration for “automated dumb process, last in first out, first in first out. Employee involvement, right first time and total employee involvement are essential. It’s a work in progress because we exhibit passion, tenacity and optimism.”

These attributes are evident in all that we are able to accomplish with the help of many friends. Thank you to the dedicated Chamber’s Board of Directors, hard working committee chairs and members, generous Corporate Partners, an outstanding membership, soon to be new members, loyal Chamber staff, our many collaborators working tirelessly on a myriad of projects and you, the community, all of whom support our initiatives.

The work in progress moves forward with a very exciting fall throughout the region. Please watch for the series of Candidate Forums. Hit the

Trails to Find the Tails. Purchase a ticket to the Torrington House Tour on Sept. 22 and Preview Party on Sept 21. Attend the Oct. 5 WOW Forum. Call for information or go online to register.

It all comes together with passion, tenacity and optimism and the only way to continue promoting economic growth while enhancing the quality of life in NW CT.
