TORRINGTON — To celebrate its new mascot, “Dr. Barkley,” one of the Tails of NW CT dog sculptures, Community Health & Wellness Center is hosting “Pizza with the Pups,” a community event, Thursday, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will be held at CHWC’s Torrington medical office at 469 Migeon Avenue.

During the festivities, residentss will have the opportunity to see a demonstration by the Torrington K-9 Unit team: Officer Justin Deloy and his partner Titus, a black German Shepherd, at 4 p.m.

Guests can meet Tuna, a Golden Retriever owned by Dale Picard, co-founder of Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities of Winsted, at 5 p.m. Pizza and snacks will be served, and children can pose for a souvenir “Pizza with the Pups” Instax photo with a commemorative frame. Pizza is provided, in part, courtesy of a donation from Torrington’s Big Y.

Tails of NW CT is a public art project made possible by the collaboration of three regional nonprofits: The Northwest Connecticut Arts Council, The Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation, and Prime Time House. The initiative offered a series of dog forms that have been decorated by various artists and made available to area businesses to “foster” on display for the public to view. The dog sculptures can then be “adopted” at the Tails of NW CT Auction on Saturday, October 20th. CHWC will adopt Dr. Barkley, who was created by area artist Jennifer Atkins. He’s a “dogtor” who wears blue scrubs and has a stethoscope around his neck.

“We are delighted to open our lobby up for the public to view Dr. Barkley up close and personal during ‘Pizza with the Pups,’” said Joanne Borduas, CEO of CHWC, in a written statement. “Our staff loves animals, and we are grateful that the Torrington Police K-9 Unit and ECAD partnered with us for this special event.”

CHWC offers a range of healthcare services for the underserved throughout northwest Connecticut, including medical, dental, chiropractic, and counseling services. It strives to achieve the reputation of “provider of choice” for affordable, high quality services that achieve positive patient outcomes in a welcoming and caring environment.
