Masonic lodge awards highest honor
WINSTED — Maurice R. Gabelmann (Moe) was awarded the Masonic Pier Pont Edwards award, the highest Masonic honor in Connecticut, at St. Andrew’s #64 Lodge, Winsted, on Wednesday, Oct. 3. The award was presented by Marshall Robinson, Grand Master of Connecticut.
Gabelmann received the award because he is representative of the principles of Masonry. He became a Mason in November 1964, and has served as Master of the Lodge in 1974,92, 02 11 and 2015.
Gabelman is a member of the Scottish Rite, receiving his 32nd degree in 1968. He is also an affiliate member of Village Lodge in Canton. On the first Sunday of every month, he organizes and implements a roast beef dinner for the seniors of Winsted, raising money for scholarships and lodge utilities.
He is a wealth of lodge information, and has been effective in recruiting new members of St. Andrew’s.
Gabelmann was born in 1937 in Winsted and is a lifelong resident. He was married for 46 years to his late wife Carol. He retired from Connecticut Light and Power after 32 years. He is a member of the Winsted Historical Society and serves on the board of the Regional Refuse District #1 and the Winsted Auxiliary Thrift Shop. He has also been a member of the local Kiwanis, and, in 2016, was honored with a Legacy award for his community involvement and contributions from the Winsted Democratic Town Committee. This award signifies the high standards and values of Connecticut Masons, which Moe represents.
