Pindell, Sterling win multiple UConn team awards
Senior quarterback David Pindell was named the most valuable player and offensive player of the year on the 2018 UConn football team.
Pindell set a program record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 1,139, the most for any Football Bowl Subdivision quarterback heading into the bowl game season. Pindell had six 100-yard rushing games as a senior including four in a row. His 3,101 yards of total offense rank third on UConn’s single-season charts behind the 3,444 and 3,313 marks set by Dan Orlovsky in 2003 and 2004. He also registered four of the top 12 single game total offense marks in UConn history.
Senior linebacker Santana Sterling was named the defensive player of the year after leading the team with seven tackles for loss and finishing second with 80 total tackles. Sterling was also presented with the Jasper T. Howard Award for being the player who the coaching staff felt like best exemplified the words “play every play like it’s the last play you’ll ever play” uttered by Howard after a 2007 win over Louisville. Howard would be murdered hours later.
Freshman punter Luke Magliozzi, who set a program single-season record with an average of 42.9 yards per punt, was named
the special teams player of the year.
Other award winners included quarterback Brandon Bisack (John L. Toner Scholar Athlete Award), center Ryan Crozier (Joseph M. Giannelli Unsung Hero Award), receiver Kyle Buss (Kendall Madison Award for dedication, hard work and outstanding citizenship), tight end Aaron McLean (Brian Kozlowski Award, given to the most courageous, hard working and productive player on the team) and offensive tackle Matt Peart (Alumni Award).
