Adams out 4-6 weeks with MCL sprain

Senior guard’s UConn career could be over

- By David Borges

Jalen Adams may have played his last game in a UConn uniform.

The school announced on Friday that Adams has been diagnosed with a Grade 2+ MCL sprain in his left knee, according to the results of an MRI he underwent on Thursday afternoon. A Grade 2+ sprain is more severe than just a Grade 2 sprain. He will be out of action for 4-6 weeks.

UConn’s regular season ends four weeks from Sunday at ECU. The American Athletic Conference tournament begins the following week in Memphis, so if Adams’s rehab goes well, it’s possible he could return for that. However, the senior guard may not want to risk further injury, with hopes of a professional career after graduation.

UConn’s only avenue to the NCAA tournament is likely through an automatic bid by winning the AAC tournament. The Huskies could get an NIT bid, though that will be made a lot tougher having to go at least the next month without their best player and leading scorer.

Adams suffered the injury in UConn’s loss at Temple Wednesday night, when Owl forward J.P. Moorman rolled up on Adams’ left leg while diving for a loose ball just under six minutes into the game. Adams’s leg twisted in an awkward way, and he lay on the floor in obvious pain before being carried off to the locker room.

If Adams has played his

last game as a Husky, let the record show that his 1,659 career points ranks 12th all-time on the school’s scoring list, nine points ahead of Khalid El-Amin

and five behind Cliff Robinson.

The 6-foot-3 guard out of Roxbury, Mass. may be best remembered for the 75-foot buzzer-beater in the 2016 AAC tournament to send UConn’s first-round game with Cincinnati into a fourth overtime. The Huskies

wound up winning the game and rolled on to win the tournament and advance to the NCAA tourney for likely the only time in Adams’s career.

Adams also hit a gamewinning layup to beat Temple as a sophomore, and at 17 points per game, will likely finish as the Huskies’ leading scorer for a third straight season.

Adams will begin appropriate treatment as soon as possible, according to UConn.
