The Tor­ring­ton Lions Club re­cently com­pleted eye screen­ings at Forbes School, St.Peter-St.Fran­cis School and Tor­ring­ton Chris­tian Academy, ex­am­in­ing the eyes of 393 chil­dren us­ing the Welch Al­lyn Spot screen­ing ma­chine. Mem­bers record the child’s last name and age and prints a re­port, which in­di­cates pass or fail for the most com­mon vi­sion is­sues, al­low­ing the nurse to re­fer the re­sults to par­ents for a fol­lowup exam with an eye doc­tor. Club mem­bers en­cour­age all par­ents to please take ad­van­tage of th­ese screen­ings, which are free. Mem­bers have heard that when a re­fer­ral is sug­gested, the child was pre­scribed glasses, and made a sig­nif­i­cant im­prove­ment of their grades and at­ti­tudes. The Lions will be pro­vid­ing ad­di­tional screen­ing at Vo­gel-Wet­more School dur­ing the last two weeks of Fe­bru­ary.
