Torrington awarded $400K for housing rehab project loans
TORRINGTON — The city has been awarded a $400,000 grant it applied for from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development to fund the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program, Mayor Elinor Carbone said in a release.
The money is available for use as deferred no interest loans to “income eligible residential property owners for housing rehabilitation projects,” the release said. “The mission of the rehabilitation program is to serve as many candidates with limited resources and to focus on health and safety improvements to the homes of low and moderate-income residents.”
Eligible repairs include, but are not limited to, roof, window or siding replacement; electrical and heating system upgrades; septic system repair; handicap accessibility; lead paint removal, the release said.
Carbone said the city is “very fortunate to receive this grant.”
“We recognize that there is a need for a housing rehabilitation program in Torrington and we are grateful for the opportunity to bring those resources to our residents and property owners to improve their homes, to preserve and protect their investment, and provide a safe comfortable living environment” Carbone said, also in the statement.
A pamphlet with information on the program and applications are available in the Mayor’s Office and can also be accessed by entering “Housing Rehab Program” on the City of Torrington’s website at www.torringtonct.org, or by contacting the Housing Rehabilitation Program administrator, Lisa Low & Associates at 203.888.5625 or info@lisalowassociates.com .
