Huskies land Canadian QB prospect
Next year’s UConn football roster could include as many as three quarterbacks from Canada.
Jonathan Senecal, a Class of 2020 prospect, announced his commitment to UConn on Tuesday. Graduate transfer Mike Beaudry and incoming freshman Jack Zergiotis are Canadian natives who will compete for the starting quarterback position on this year’s UConn squad following the graduation of David Pindell and recent departure of Marvin Washington.
Senecal is the third player from the Class of 2020 to commit to UConn in the last two days. As a junior at Andre-Grasset in Montreal he was 179 of 279 for 2,769 yards with 27 touchdowns and six interceptions. He passed for more than 400 yards in four of the nine games in 2018 and also ran four touchdowns. He has thrown for 5,885 yards with 58 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in the last two seasons. He has thrown at least four touchdown passes in eight of his 18 games as the starting quarterback with seven of his 16 interceptions coming in two games.
He has already set Quebec Student Sport Federation Division I singleseason and career marks for touchdowns passes and his 3,116 passing yards as a sophomore set another record. He is on pace to also finish with the most career completions and passing yards.
Senecal, who is rated by canadafootballchat.com as the No. 1 Canadian quarterback in the Class of 2020, has been drawing rave reviews even with just two seasons as a starter.
“I’ve been watching college football for many years and it’s probably the best quarterback in the last 15 or 20 years,” University of Montreal head coach Danny Maciocia said in a 2018 story posted on the www.tvasports.ca site. “He is a young man who presents himself well and who has a whole future.”
