Emilie Munson named D.C. reporter for Hearst Connecticut Media
Emilie Munson, an awardwinning state Capitol reporter, has been named the Washington, D.C., reporter for Hearst Connecticut Media.
Munson has led Hearst Connecticut’s coverage of a number of state issues, including tolls and gaming. She is the recipient of a 2017 Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi award in Feature Reporting for her fivepart series, “Behind the Front Door.” The narrative series explored the intersection of domestic violence and wealth in Greenwich.
She previously was an education reporter for Greenwich Time. She is a graduate of Middlebury College and a Massachusetts native.
“I am so excited for this chance to cover Congress and the federal government, while continuing to collaborate with my wonderful colleagues and editors in Connecticut,” said Munson.
Munson also will be reporting for the Albany Times Union, a Hearst newspaper. She will replace Dan Freedman, who spent 32 years in the Hearst Washington Bureau and will retire at the end of the year. Munson will join Freedman in reporting from D.C. in September.
Freedman covered eight Supreme Court confirmation hearings, including those of Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh. He has covered the U.S.Mexico border, the FBI, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and traveled with the George W. Bush presidential campaign in 2000.
He also wrote about the federal debate over guns, especially after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown.
Freedman is the winner of the 2018 David Lynch Memorial Award for Regional Reporting.
“I feel privileged to have chronicled the great news events of our time, as well as dig beneath the surface on a wide variety of topics important to our readership,” Freedman said. “But now’s the right time to pass the torch, and I’m proud it goes to Emilie Munson. I know readers will benefit enormously by her reporting from Washington.”
In retirement, Freedman plans to travel, write and spend time with his family, which includes 3 grandchildren.
“Hearst Connecticut and the Albany Times Union are very fortunate to have Emilie taking over the coverage of our congressional delegations and the federal government,” said Hearst Connecticut Managing Editor John Ferraro. “Emilie is a relentless reporter and powerful writer who will provide sharp insight into what is happening in Washington. And we thank Dan for his years of topnotch reporting on some of the most important issues and moments in our nation’s recent history.”
