N.Y. woman drowns in Housatonic

NEW MILFORD — A Bronx woman died Monday evening after being pulled from the Housatonic River.

Gaylordsville firefighters and New Milford EMS responded to a reported drowning near the Bulls Bridge Power Plant around 6 p.m. Monday.

The exact location was unclear at the time, but a female victim was said to be “unresponsive and not breathing,” according to dispatch reports.

A caller told the dispatcher the victim was out of water, and Sherman Ambulance was called to the Sherman side of the river around 6:05 p.m. State police from Troop A in Southbury responded.

At least two male individuals helped with the river rescue — one of whom was a man in his 30s who received medical attention for “exhaustion and a little hypothermia,” according to dispatch reports.

New Milford first responders searched the area of the Basket Shop and Bulls Bridge Power Plant, while Sherman responders searched near the River Oaks golf course.

It wasn’t until about 6:23 p.m. that emergency personnel located the drowning victim, as well as another Bronx, N.Y. resident, on the Sherman side of the river.

Responders were instructed to go to the intersection of Long River Road and River Bend Lane

and follow a dirt trail near the 12th hole of the golf course to reach them.

A state trooper was already performing CPR on the female drowning victim, according to dispatch reports.

Two patients were transported to New Milford Hospital’s emergency room, police said. One was treated and released, but the drowning victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

New Milford police are withholding the names of both victims until family members are notified. The age of the drowning victim also has not been released.

Monday’s incident wasn’t the first New Milfordrelated drowning in recent months.

Seventeenyearold Joshua Dasilva drowned Memorial Day while swimming with friends in Candlewood Lake at the Dike Point Recreation Area.

The following month, 19yearold New Milford man Leonel Salvador drowned in Bantam Lake near Point Folly in the town of Bantam.
