Five Points Gallery to launch 3 new shows
TORRINGTON — Five Points Gallery, at 33 Main St. in downtown Torrington, will open three new shows, Susan Clinard’s “Inside Out,” a solo exhibition, Christine Breslin’s “A Suspension of Stereotypic Perception,” a solo show, and “The 8th Annual Connecticut Printmakers Invitational,” curated by Amanda Lebel. The three exhibitions will run through Sept. 14.
In the East Gallery, “Inside Out” is a solo exhibition of sculptor Susan Clinard’s new work.
Known for her socially conscious and feminist themes, she uses wood, wire and found objects to explore “nature’s forms, distorted and perfect.” Clinard tells stories with her extraordinary lifesize sculptures, inviting us to observe the public and private histories of racism and inequality. She writes that the work “helps us connect and speak about our shared fears” with the hope that it can “initiate change.”
In the TDP Gallery, Christine Breslin’s “A Suspension of Stereotypic Perception: Illuminating Portraits and Stories of our Latino Residents” is a solo exhibit that explores Latino immigration. Interfacing historic and contemporary techniques — a largeformat camera and the historic wet plate collodion process, combined with video interviews — the photographer “tells the stories of the subjects who came to this country in order to seek a better life and the sacrifices they made for their families.” The work reflects her “perception of the changing climate in the U.S. to immigrants.”
The West Gallery features “The 8th Annual Connecticut Printmakers Invitational.” This group show of eight artists who use multiple techniques was curated by printmaker Amanda Lebel. She writes that the participants demonstrate the “diverse nature of contemporary printmaking through many mediums, contents and styles.” The printmakers participating are Irene Bednarczyk, Emily Larned, Michael Levine, Chris O’Flaherty, Margot Rocklen,.Sarah Sparkowski, Deborah Weiss and Annie Wildey.
Five Points Gallery will hold two events in conjunction with the exhibitions: an Opening Reception on Friday, Aug. 16, 6 to 8:30 p.m.; and an Artists’ Panel Discussion in the Gallery on Friday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m. Gallery hours are Thursday through Monday, 1 to 5 p.m., and by appointment. There is no admission charge. Five Points exhibitions and educational events are free and open to the public.
