NEW HARTFORD — Tamara Witkin, an indepenent associate of LegalShield, a service that helps people find affordable assistance for a variety of legal issues, is offering informative talks at area libraries in October, November and December.

Witkin is a professional musician, music director and certified fitness instructor for seniors at the Northwest Connecticut YMCA. She happened upon LegalShield after a protracted probate case involving immediate family, after the death of her father, which dragged into other New York and New Jersey courts, she said in a statement.

“I became a LegalShield member with all due skepticism, at first, until my home at the time was ravaged of the first major hurricane in the 100year flood zone where I lived,” she said. “I put my membership to the test and deployed the expert legal advice and counsel ... to obtain justice with the moving company who damaged my piano, the flood insurance company whose settlement offer fell short of what was needed for repair, and expert legal advice in the areas of copyright, family law, home ownership, rental agreement contract review and advice, and so much more, in just the first few months of my active membership.”

Witkin said she found herself referring many people to LegalShield. “I thought I may as well find out how to work with the company, to position myself to be paid for these referrals,” she said. “I contacted my original agent to inquire about this. My first happy and satisfied member was (and is still) my own mother.”

Since then, Witkin has given free public overviews, oneonone counseling, and in years past, hosted business to business networking breakfasts in Stratford with her colleague, Doug Turnage, who has a background in mortgages.

“I have helped tens of individuals, families, and small businesses to become safer, more empowered and protected,” Witkin said. “I have participated in company trainings and most recently, attended a national conference to avail myself of the latest tools and techniques to share with you.”

“This work exposes the public to an alternative to the high hourly cost of hiring attorneys to obtain legal advice, while rewarding us with over 5,000 benefits for joining this cooperative nationwide system,” she said. “Incidentally, as a LegalShield ‘Lady of Justice,’ I am the only spokesperson for LegalShield and IDShield in the northwest corner of Connecticut who publicly presents. I am looking to help build awareness and team support for this work and I have recruited a Winsted resident to assist me in spreading the word.”
