Team Connecticu­t heads west for championsh­ip

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Twelve teams of junior golfers age 14 and under will compete in the 8th PGA Jr. League Championsh­ip, presented by National Car Rental, Oct. 1114 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The teams are divided into two divisions, Ryder and Wanamaker, and play each other in a series of roundrobin, ninehole matches, utilizing a twoperson, scramble format. After a skills competitio­n on Friday, Oct. 11, each team will compete against the five other teams in its division throughout the day Saturday and Sunday, and Monday morning, Oct. 1214.

Finally, on Oct. 14, the two teams with the best division records will compete for the national title. The runnerup teams from each division will also compete for 3rd place.

Team Connecticu­t from Fairview Farms Golf Course, Harwinton, joins the lineup of competitor­s in this year’s championsh­ip.

This year, a twohour highlight show will debut on ESPN2 on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT. ESPN will be the new broadcast network of the PGA Jr. League Championsh­ip presented by National Car Rental. For the second year, the Championsh­ip’s cub reporter and PGA Jr. League player himself – 11yearold Warren Fisher of Riverton, Utah – is back to provide his colorful commentary and updates throughout the weekend.

“The PGA Jr. League Championsh­ip presented by National Car Rental is the pinnacle of a fun and exciting postseason for these 12 talented AllStar teams,” said PGA President Suzy Whaley, PGA/LPGA, in a statement. “Grayhawk Golf Club has helped us create a remarkable experience for the PGA Jr. League AllStars and their families, and we look forward to welcoming them to Scottsdale.”

Team Connecticu­t includes captain Bob Sparks and coach Jim Bunel, PGA – Fairview Farm Golf Course, Harwinton, and players Brennan Meyers of Kensington, Mass., Caleb Smith of Terryville; Will Gregware of West Hartford; Reilly Fowles of Northampto­n, Mass., Galen Fowles of Northampto­n, Mass., Alexander Halpert of Watertown, North Chery of Monroe, Annie Dai of Longmeadow, Mass., and Luke Hoglund of Fairfield. Teams also hail from North Carolina, Texas, Washington, Minnesota, Ohio, Louisiana.
