Cemetery tours offer seasonal window into town’s history

WINSTED — The sixth annual cemetery walk was held at Center Cemetery in Winsted on Saturday. Nine characters from the town’s history came to life to share their stories with tour guests. The 60minute tours were sponsored by the Soldiers Monument Commission.

For those who missed this Halloweent­hemed event, there are plenty of other activities planned through Oct. 31.

Haunted hayride

On Oct. 2526, the Woodbury Lions Club’s 28th Annual Haunted Hayride and 3D Haunted Barn will be held in Woodbury. Rides starting from Mitchell School, from 6:309 p.m. Tickets are $12 adults, $6 under age 10. Refreshmen­ts are available for sale at the school.

Haunted hikes

Flanders Nature Center in Woodbury is offering Haunted Hikes, Oct. 2526. Family hikes will be held at 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., led by “hermit guides.” The hikes are childfrien­dly with lowkey fun for families. Costumed characters will hand out treats. From 68 p.m., hikes begin every 30 minutes, for adults and youth age 12 and older.

Cost is $5 per person, $20 max per family. There will be seasonal refreshmen­ts available for purchase.

Washington cemetery tours

In Washington, the 12th annual Washington Green Cemetery Tour will be held Oct. 25, 6:308:30 pm. The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 27. The tour starts at the

Gunn Historical Museum, 5 Wykeham Road, Washington. Parking is extremely limited. While there is no fee to attend this event, donations are greatly appreciate­d. All funds raised support the Gunn Historical Museum.

The Washington Green Cemetery Tour is an annual “living history” event that showcases the rich history of Washington using costumed actors to portray residents from the past. With more than 375 people expected to attend, the tour is the largest history event produced by the museum each year. This year’s tour, with new stories, is produced by the Gunn Historical Museum with support from local theater legends Doug and Martha Winkel of the Washington Dramalites.

Tours depart every ten minutes between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. and last approximat­ely one hour. Members of Friends of the Gunn Historical Museum will be given preference for the first tour and should preregiste­r. Tickets will be distribute­d under a tent in the Gunn Museum’s parking lot, on a firstcomef­irstserve basis, starting at 6 p.m. and continue

through the evening until the tickets run out.

A Halloweent­hemed movie will be shown in the Wykeham Room of the Gunn Library where attendees can wait inside for their tour group to depart. Tour guests are encouraged to bring a flashlight, dress warmly, wear comfortabl­e walking shoes, and carpool since parking is limited.

Corn maze and supper

In Litchfield, a corn maze event and supper will be held Oct. 25 at Bunnell Farm in Litchfield to benefit Kitty Quarters, an animal rescue organizati­on in Torrington. Maze tickets are $8 8for adults, $5 for children under 10. Soup, chili & other supper items along with desserts and refreshmen­ts can be individual­ly purchased separate from the corn maze from 58 p.m. There will be childrens’ games and prizes along with a visit from Miss Kitty at 5 p.m.

Creepy critters

Things that Go Bump in the Night! will be held Oct. 26, 78 p.m. at Matthies Grove Pavilion, Peoples State Forest, East River Road, Barkhamste­d, with Master Wildlife Conservati­onist and Friends of People State Forest board member Ginny Apple as she reveals nocturnal wildlife and the creepy critter sounds some of them make. Hot chocolate and s’mores by the campfire will also be provided.

Halloween dog walk

A Spooky Halloween Dog Walk with Gerri and Bradley will be held Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., at White Memorial Conservati­on Center, Litchfield. Dress yourself and your dog for Halloween and take a stroll along the Pine Island Trail to

Little Pond and then onto the Litchfield Greenway via Gallows Lane passing the cemetery, and ending at Mallard Marsh. All dogs must be on leads. Spooky treats will be provided. for everybody after the walk. This hike will be about 3 miles on flat terrain but small dogs may find the footing along the Boardwalk a bit precarious. Trunk or Treats

The Torrington Parks and Recreation Department’s Trunk or Treat event will take place on Saturday, October 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Torrington Armory near Fussenich Park. Cosponsors for this event are the Torrington Lions Club, Torrington Municipal & Teachers Federal Credit Union, and Doyle’s Medical Supply. The rain date is Oct. 27.

Morris Beach and Recreation is also hosting a Trunk or Treat event, Oct. 27, 46 p.m. in the parking lot at James Morris School. Volunteers to decorate their car trunks and hand out candy will be eligible for a prize. Costume contests for the children will also be held, with prizes. To register your car, email Morrissrct­r@op
