That time Judy Garland sang about Connecticut

- By Jordan Fenster

The new movie about Judy Garland starring Renée Zellweger as the iconic actress and singer features several of her better known hits — “Over the Rainbow,” for example, and “Zing Went the Strings.”

Filmmakers omitted a song called “Connecticut,” in which Garland sings all about the Nutmeg State.

Written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane and recorded by Bing Crosby and Garland in 1945, “Connecticut” is complimentary of the state.

“Connecticut is the place for me. It's such a great state, for a late date, with a maid waiting just for you,” according to Martin’s lyrics.

The song was released by Decca Records in 1948 on a Bing Crosby album

“And every Yale guy, is a male guy, through and through,” Garland sings.

The song’s narrator goes on to list several places he’s been — Capri, Naples, Rome — but concludes that “Connecticut still will be my home.”

The song was released by Decca Records in 1948 on Crosby’s album, “Bing Crosby Sings with Judy Garland, Mary Martin,

Johnny Mercer.”

Martin and Blane wrote several songs that were recorded by Garland, among them “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” which later also was recorded by Frank Sinatra.

“Circled the globe, dozens of times, seen all it's wonders, known all it's climes,” the song concludes. “I've searched it with a finetooth comb, and found that I only have one home, sweet home, Connecticut will always be my home, sweet home.”

A New Haven Symphony Orchestra event featuring Garland’s music is scheduled for June 6, 2020, at Hamden High School. Visit newhavensymphony.org for more information.
