HARWINTON — The Harwinton Outstanding Citizen Committee is seeking nominations for the 46th annual Harwinton Outstanding Citizen Award, which will be presented to a deserving town resident at a banquet to be held April 17 at the Fairview Farm Golf Course, 300 Hill Road, Harwinton.

The deadline for nominations is Feb. 7. Residents are asked to nominate the person who, in their opinion, represents outstanding volunteerism and devotion to Harwinton. To be eligible, a candidate must have been a resident of Harwinton for a minimum of five years and must be engaged in the civic affairs of the town, whether elected, appointed, or voluntary.

William T. Buys was the recipient of the award in 2019. Originally named in honor of Arthur B. Poole, the commendation was first awarded in 1975 to author and Harwinton Historian, Raymond G. Bentley.

Letters of nomination should contain the nominee’s activities and contributions to the betterment of Harwinton and should be sent to Cindy Orefice, Chairman, at 231 Lead Mine Brook Road, Harwinton, CT 06791 or emailed to cindy.orefice@gmail.com. All nominations are confidential.

A rotating committee of three Harwinton residents and three most recent past honorees determines the recipient of the award each year. Members of the 2020 committee are: Cora Bell, Bill Buys, John Fredsall, Monty Lyons, Maddy Marzullo, and Cindy Orefice. In addition to being honored at the banquet, the award recipient’s name will be engraved on a plaque bearing the names of past honorees. A check from the proceeds of the dinner will also be presented to a charity selected by the award recipient.
