KEEP AN EYE ON
Sid the Kid: Sid Wilson is coming off perhaps his best game at UConn, with 12 points, a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, some huge blocked shots and one of the most dynamic sequences of plays (a block and putback dunk in the final minute of the first half) the program has seen in a while in Sunday’s double-overtime loss to Wichita State.
This after playing zero minutes in two of UConn’s first three league games. The loss of Tyler Polley for the season, coupled with Wilson’s impressive performance on Sunday, would seem to guarantee him plenty of minutes moving forward. Not necessarily.
“We’ve had over 200 practices together and close to 60 games ... that’s the best he’s ever played, in practice or in a game,” Hurley noted. “We were all thrilled to see that performance, but you’ve got to do that every day. (Saturday’s) going to be a true test of how solid and consistent he can be, because this is a hard team to play against at both ends.”
Bouk ‘em, Dan: James Bouknight is the biggest “beneficiary” (if that’s the right word) of the loss of Polley. He made his first collegiate start on Sunday and scored 16 points in an uneven performance.
“He’s got a long way to go in terms of play-in, play-out, the integrity you need to have at both ends,” Hurley said. “Understanding scouting reports, defensive principles, the nuances of executing offense. Having his talent on the court, it’s an important part of our rebuilding process.”
Press to play?: The Huskies’ frenetic fullcourt pressure in the final minutes of regulation allowed them to erase a nine-point deficit and force overtime against Wichita, but it isn’t easy to maintain that intensity for 40 minutes.
“I’ve always been a fullcourt, man pressure coach,” Hurley said. “My teams have always been great at pressuring an opponent, forcing turnovers, blocking shots, making our opponent uncomfortable. Whether you’re doing that by pressuring three-quarter court, or running and jumping or playing a diamond, whatever you’re doing, it can be effective.”
Rank against ranked teams: Since the start of the 2014-15 season, UConn is 4-26 against ranked opponents. The Huskies are 1-11 on neutral floors and 0-7 on the road. Their last win over a ranked team in a true road game was on Jan. 16, 2014 at Memphis. UConn won the national championship that season.
Of course, UConn didn’t play a single true road game against a ranked foe last season. In fact, this will be the Huskies’ first such game in Hurley’s tenure.
