KEEP AN EYE ON
Finish strong: UConn coach Geno Auriemma wants to see his team play like it did against the last ranked opponent it faced — well, almost. The Huskies ran with defending national champion Baylor for three quarters, before melting down in the fourth quarter of a 74-58 loss on Jan. 9.
“Every time you play a really, really good team, you want to make sure you’re in position to win the game at the end and that you have what it takes to close it out. Nothing less, nothing more, that’s it,” he said Wednesday. “Be in a position to win the game, and then be in a position to close it out.” The Huskies are 1-1 against ranked opponents this season. Sizing up to the competition: Tennessee is averaging 49.2 rebounds per game, good for second in the country. Junior Rennia Davis — one of seven players on the team standing 6-foot-2 or taller — is the Lady Vols’ top rebounder (8.3), in addition to their leading scorer (17.3).
“She’s definitely carrying the team, a go-to player,” UConn point guard Crystal Dangerfield said. “She can force a matchup problem. She can play inside, and she can do things outside. She’s very athletic, and we’re definitely going to have to pay attention to her.”
History at a glance: UConn is 13-9 all-time against Tennessee, including 4-0 in national championships. The Lady Vols have won the last three games in the series, which is being revived after a 13-year hiatus.
