Sun acquire All-Star Bonner from Mercury
After falling one victory short of the WNBA title last season, the Connecticut Sun are pushing to complete the final step.
The Sun completed a stunning move Tuesday, sending three first-round draft picks to the Phoenix Mercury for All-Star DeWanna Bonner. It was a sign-and-trade deal for Bonner, who was an unrestricted free agent and will earn an extra $30,000 by signing a maximum deal with her old team.
Connecticut sent the seventh and 10th picks in this year’s draft, along with a first-round pick in 2021. The Sun swapped first round picks with the Seattle Storm in a deal for Morgan Tuck, moving from the 11th pick to secure the seventh pick.
In Bonner, the Sun received a player who averaged 17.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists. She was the Mercury’s secondleading scorer behind Brittney Griner (20.7) and was fifth in the league.
In 10 seasons with Phoenix, Bonner had 4,820 points, 2,072 rebounds, and 705 assists while winning WNBA titles in 2009 and 2014. Bonner, 32, is second in franchise history in scoring (behind Diana Taurasi) and is the Mercury’s all-time leader in rebounding.
She was the league’s Sixth Woman of the Year 2009-11 and was First Team All-WNBA in 2015.
The Sun signed Jonquel Jones to a two-year contract Monday. With a core of Jones, Alyssa Thomas, Jasmine Thomas and Courtney Williams returning, Bonner will make the Sun a favorite to win the WNBA title this season.
