Crews respond to overlapping calls
TORRINGON — City firefighters put out a basement fire on Whiting Avenue and came to the aid of a woman on Migeon Avenue on Monday during overlapping calls, according to the Torrington Fire Department.
In a release, Battalion Chief Thomas Sterling said firefighters were called to 35 Whiting Ave. for a potential structure fire at 4:14 p.m.
Crews found fire in the basement and requested a second alarm, Sterling said. The fire was out by 4:35 p.m.
No one was injured in the fire, Sterling said. A puppy was rescued from the first floor. Nine people were displaced and are now receiving assistance from the Red Cross, Sterling said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Sterling said.
At 4:30 p.m., firefighters were also called to 952 Migeon Ave. for a potential structure fire, Deputy Chief David Tripp said in a second release.
Tripp said he and Assistant Chief Robert Shopey III left the Whiting Avenue scene and responded to the Migeon Avenue residence, finding light smoke coming from the windows.
Tripp said Shopey and Torrington police, unable to enter the home through the front door, forced their way through the rear door.
“Chief Shopey noticed a glowing element with a pot on the stove. As he turned off the power, he heard a groaning noise coming from the living room area. Located on the couch was a female patient. Chief Shopey and TPD Officer Kelly removed her through the front door,” Tripp said.
The woman later refused treatment, Tripp said.
Further city firefighters ventilated the smoke from the building, aided by volunteer firefighters from the Drakeville Volunteer Fire Department and Harwinton Westside Volunteer Fire Department, Tripp said.
