2 face charges in car theft

BARKHAMSTE­D — A man and a juvenile were arrested and charged with stealing a car after they were apprehende­d in Barkhamste­d early Monday.

According to the police report, Winchester police officers saw a car speeding on Elm Street in Winsted and heading east on Main Street around 1:30 a.m..

As the driver approached the traffic signal at Main Street and Case Avenue, the driver ran a red light, police said. Police tried to stop the car and gave chase, stopping their pursuit at the Barkhamste­d line, according to the report. Connecticu­t State Police were notified.

At about 1:37 a.m., Winchester police were told by state police that the speeding car had been involved in a crash on Route 44 in Barkhamste­d, and that three occupants in the car had fled the scene. State police asked Winchester for assistance. Police found two of the three suspects behind Ken’s Liquor Store on Route 44 in Barkhamste­d, according to the report.

State police later learned that the car had been stolen from Seymour.

Police arrested Antonio Marrero-Wallen, 18, and a 16-year-old male. The third suspect has not been found, according to the report.

Marrero-Wallen is charged with second-degree larceny by possession, based on the value of the vehicle, which was $13,000, according to the report. He also was charged with interferin­g with a peace officer. Marrero-Wallen was arraigned in Superior Court in Torrington later Monday and is free on bond,police said.

The juvenile was released to the custody of his parents and is charged with second-degree larceny by possession and interferin­g with a peace officer. He is scheduled to appear in juvenile court in Waterbury Aug. 17.

State police are handling the motor vehicle crash report.
