Meals on Wheels fundraiser needs support

TORRINGTON — The Meals on Wheels Program, sponsored by the Litchfield Hills Northwest Elderly Nutrition Program, The City of Torrington and partially funded by the Western CT Area Agency on Aging, announce the kick off of the “Buy A Wheel” fundraiser. The campaign will benefit the local Meals on Wheels Program that delivers two meals each day to homebound seniors.

The following stores are showing their support by participat­ing in this event Bantam Market IGA March 1-31; LaBonne's Market (Salisbury location) March 20 — April 2; Davis IGA of Kent March 21 — April 3.

Stores are offering customers the Meals on Wheels “wheel” for a $1 donation. The wheels, listing each donor’s name, will be displayed at the store. The campaign will run for two weeks or more in March during store-selected weeks.

Meals on Wheels is administer­ed by the City of Torrington, Litchfield Hills Northwest Elderly Nutrition Program which also provides meal services at local senior centers. We are asking participan­ts of any of these services and their family and friends to please support this event that assists with keeping homebound seniors independen­t in their own home.

Stop & Shop kicks off MSK Kids fundraiser

Stop & Shop customers in the tri-state area will be able to support MSK Kids, the pediatric program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, with the

supermarke­t’s Help Cure Childhood Cancer’ campaign.

The annual program, which celebrates its 20th anniversar­y this year, raises money to support pediatric cancer research. Stop & Shop has donated more than $25 million to pediatric cancer research at MSK since the partnershi­p began two decades ago, which has supported numerous initiative­s not only impacting children and families treated at MSK, but also across the globe including the developmen­t of cell-based therapies and other innovative, life-saving treatments according to a statement. The fundraiser runs through March 31.

In-store shoppers can donate at checkout, while those shopping online for Pickup or Delivery have the option of giving $1, $3, $5, $10 or $20 when completing their order. All proceeds will benefit MSK Kids at MSK.

In honor of the 20th anniversar­y of the Help Cure Childhood Cancer Campaign, Stop & Shop will donate 20 tons of food to MSK’s FOOD (Food to Overcome Outcomes Disparitie­s) Program, which aims to alleviate food insecurity and increase awareness of how hunger impacts a patient’s ability to fight cancer, according to the statement. Since opening its first food pantry specifical­ly for cancer patients in 2011, the FOOD program has distribute­d more than 300,000 meals to 4,000 patients and their families. The program now operates 13 pantries located in cancer clinics serving patients in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and on Long Island.

Takeout Tuesdays continues in March

TORRINGTON — St. John Paul the Great Academy in Torrington is continuing its partnershi­ps with local restaurant on a fundraisin­g campaign they call “Takeout Tuesdays” in March. Each week on Tuesdays and one Wednesday, a different local restaurant will donate a portion of proceeds from takeout orders made between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to the academy, a Catholic elementary school that enrolls more than 140 students in pre-kindergart­en through eighth grade.

It is with deep sadness to inform you that on Friday, February 26, 2021, Edward Vincent Follert, Jr., entered eternal rest at the age of 57.

Ed was born July 19, 1963 in Hartford, CT. He graduated from Canton High School in 1981. Ed was a proud man who worked various jobs over the years including several restaurant­s in his younger days, Valley Energy, Canton Well Drilling, SSS, Butch & Loveland and as a traffic controller. He loved animals, camping, fishing (deep sea) and cooking. Ed is predecease­d by his father, Edward Vincent Follert, Sr., and is survived by his mother, Arlene (O’Meara) Follert of Canton, CT. Ed leaves behind two beautiful step-children, Kerri (Charles) Barrett and Christophe­r (Brittany) Barrett that he loved and cared for as if they were his own from a very young age. Also, he left behind five grandchild­ren, Haley, Hannah, Ella, Jameson and Amelia all from Torrington, CT who he adored.

Ed had four siblings: Cheryl (Jim) Deming of Avon, CT, Douglas (Ashley) Follert of Litchfield, CT, Lisa (Paul) Walzak of Canton, CT and Deborah Follert of Canton, CT. He was an amazing uncle to eight nieces and nephews: Tracey, Kevin, Rylee, Lily, Matthew, Morgan, Samantha and Jenny. He will be missed by so many of his friends including lifelong friend, Donna Marinelli of Canton, CT.

Ed had a great personalit­y. He was kind, caring, friendly and always smiling. He loved to make people laugh. He had a quick wit and a unique and contagious laugh that gave us so many fond memories to cherish. Ed left us way too soon, but will always be loved and in our hearts forever.

WALK THROUGH calling hours will be held Saturday, March 13th from 11:00am-1:00pm at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Unionville, CT. There will be a private memorial service at a future date.
