FDA: State salmonella outbreak linked to chicken

Connecticut is among eight states with a salmonella outbreak linked to tainted chicken, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Indiana-based Serenade Foods is recalling close to 60,000 pounds of chicken products, specifically frozen, raw, breaded and prebrowned, stuffed chicken items that were produced on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25, the FDA said in a press release.

The brands and products impacted are “Dutch Farms Chicken with Broccoli & Cheese,” “Milford Valley Chicken with Broccoli & Cheese,” “Milford Valley Chicken Cordon Bleu,” “Kirkwood Raw Stuffed Chicken, Broccoli & Cheese” and Kirkwood Raw Stuffed Chicken Cordon Bleu,” all with a best-if-used date of

Feb. 24 and Feb. 25, 2023.

The FDA has linked 28 cases of salmonella poisoning to the allegedly tainted chicken, 11 of which resulted in hospitalization.

Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, the most common symptoms of which are “diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product,” the FDA said. “Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.”

According to the CDC, if you have chicken products that matching the description of the contaminated batch, do not eat or cook them.

“Throw them away or return them to where you bought them,” the CDC advised. “Wash surfaces and containers that may have touched the recalled product using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.”
