May calendar has live music, play, Met in HD
TORRINGTON — May's event calendar at the Warner Theatre is filled with musical acts, comedy, live theater performances and two Met in HD shows. For tickets and information, go to warnertheatre.org, or call the box office at 860482-7180.
May 7: Torrington Symphony Orchestra presents "A Night of Broadway Music", 8 p.m. in the main theater. The show is in conjunction with the Warner Stage Company, under the direction of conductor Maurice Steinberg. The concert will feature music from Annie, The Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, Evita and others. Performances by members of the Warner Stage Company include Alyssa Bunel, Roxie Quinn, Noel Roberge, Steffon Sampson, Kelly White, and a children's chorus.
May 7-22: Stage @ the Warner presents “Silent Sky” by Lauren Gunderson, in the Nancy Marine Studio Theatre. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman's place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women's ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them.
May 7: The Met: Live in HD presents Puccini's “Turandot” at 12:55 p.m. in the main theater. Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska stars in the title role of the legendary cold-hearted princess. Tenor Yonghoon Lee is the bold prince determined to win Turandot's love, alongside soprano Ermonela Jaho as the devoted servant Liù and legendary bass Ferruccio Furlanetto as the blind king Timur. Marco Armiliato conducts Puccini's stirring opera, which takes the stage in the company's dazzling, ever-popular production by Franco Zeffirelli.
May 15: Comedian Kevin James, 8 p.m. in the main theater. James began his career as a stand-up on the Long Island comedy scene. After being discovered at the 1996 Montreal Comedy Festival, he signed a network development deal to create his own sitcom. “The King of Queens”, which premiered in 1998, ran for nine seasons on CBS with James starring and executive producing, and it garnered him an Emmy nomination in 2006 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The show concluded its run in 2007 but continues to air daily in syndication across the country and around the world. James also starred in and executive produced the sitcom “Kevin Can Wait” for Sony Television and CBS.
May 28: The Met: Live in HD, Donizetti's “Lucia di Lammermoor,” in the studio theater, 12:55 p.m. Soprano Nadine Sierra takes on one of the repertory's most formidable and storied roles, the haunted heroine of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, in an electrifying new staging by Australian theater and film director Simon Stone, conducted by Riccardo Frizza. Tenor Javier Camarena adds to the bel canto fireworks as Lucia's beloved, Edgardo, with baritone Artur Ruciski as her overbearing brother, Enrico, and bass Matthew Rose as her tutor, Raimondo.
