THS students receive leadership awards
TORRINGTON — Mary Nelson and Logan Wilson, Seniors at Torrington High School were recently recognized by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) with a Student Leadership Award.
Students are nominated to receive this award by their school principal. Students nominated should exhibit the following leadership skills: willingness to take on challenges; capability to make difficult decisions; concern for others; ability to work with others; willingness to commit to a project; diplomacy ; ability to understand issues clearly; and ability to honor a commitment

LHS students receive leadership awards
LITCHFIELD — Litchfield High School seniors Jacob Kuegler and Renee Quesnel, Litchfield Middle School student Eleanor Klug and Litchfield Intermediate School student Roch Bolton were recently awarded the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents’ Superintendent/Student Recognition Award for leadership service to the school, academic prowess relative to ability, and service to others in the community, at a May 4 ceremony at the Grand Oak Villa, in the Oakville section of Watertown.
Christopher Leone, Superintendent of Schools in Litchfield made the presentations as part of a program designed by school administrators to recognize students who have served their schools and communities while maintaining good scholastic progress.
The Superintendent/Student Recognition Program awards a Certificate of Excellence at the discretion of the local superintendent of schools according to a distribution formula set for all state school districts.
Jacob Kuegler, a senior at Litchfield High School, has a solid work ethic and a dedication to academics which has earned him the respect of faculty and peers alike. Jake has a strong interest in business and would like to pursue a degree in this field. In his junior year, he took the UConn ECE Economics course and attended a college-based summer program on Entrepreneurship. A member of Future Business Leaders of America, and Peer Mediation,
Jake is a go-to member of each group.
Renee Quesnel, a senior at Litchfield High School, is a mentor and leader to her peers. Her tireless efforts to make the world around her a better place are admired by the school community. Rene is president of the Actsof-Kindness club and a member of the Relay for Life club. Rene will always accept an opportunity to help others in school, or out. Her kindness carries over in her diligence with her studies, and her desire to succeed has earned the respect of the faculty.
Eleanor Klug is an eighth-grade student at Litchfield Middle School. A voracious reader and prolific artist, she is admired for her deep passion for learning,
fierce intellectual curiosity, and unique perspective. Kind and mature, Eleanor is driven, and unapologetically her own person. She is the secretary of Link Crew, the middle school’s leadership club, and a member of Allies in Diversity, and STEM Club. Eleanor ran for the cross-country team this fall and will play softball or run track and field in the spring.
Roch Bolton is a sixth-grade student at Litchfield Intermediate School. Roch demonstrates optimism, empathy, and responsibility daily. He possesses a versatile skill set as a three-sport athlete (baseball, basketball, football), is an avid ice fisherman, and enjoys spending time with his family, all while maintaining a high level of academic achievement as a thoughtful, critical thinker. Most importantly, Roch is viewed as a role model to his peers as he constantly exhibits kindness and respect in everything he does.
CAPSS, the statewide school superintendents’ professional organization, is based in West Hartford and provides professional development, personal support, legislative information, and educational services to its membership.
Barkhamsted student receives Quinnipiac award
HAMDEN — Quinnipiac University student Michael Neumann of Barkhamsted, recently received
the Outstanding Senior Award from the university’s School of Computing and Engineering.
The Outstanding Senior Award is given to a graduating undergraduate student in each school who has at least a 3.25 GPA, is in good standing with the University, and has sustained engagement in a student organization, program, cause on campus, or cause in the community over their Quinnipiac career; evidenced learning through the achievement of multiple personal or professional goals; developed excellent collaboration skills; and positively Impacted both the University and surrounding communities.
Neumann received the award for his positive presence on campus, both inside the confines of the School of Computing and Engineering and outside. He had one of the highest GPAs of any engineering graduate this year and is an excellent student who produced top-quality work and made the classroom environment better by engaging with the material and asking thoughtful questions. In addition to his incredibly strong academic performance, he also was involved with the community, helping build and strengthen his program both as a student mentor, by tutoring underclassmen, and as a student leader with his work in the American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter as a member and as an officer.
