Rebuilding Together helps Bantam homeowner

-

BANTAM — The Litchfield County branch of Rebuilding Together gathered in late spring, joined by volunteers from the neighborhood and the Torrington Lowe's to help a homeowner with important repairs to her home. Rebuilding's mission is to help older homeowners who are low income and who need help to make their homes warm, safe, and dry.

This year's project was the home of Patricia Kaminski on Cathole Road in Bantam. Projects included ramps, railings, plumbing repairs, new doors and windows, and some cleanout of the barn.

Kaminski said her husband, Donald, worked on the home for two years before they moved in in 1974. now deceased, HE ran PDM in New Milford, a chainsaw repair shop. Kaminski worked at Rose Haven Nursing home in Litchfield for 33 years.

The group that came to work on Rebuild Day helped her clean out the house, as well as the barn, while skilled craftsmen worked on windows, doors, and ramps.

“The neighborhood people are working too. They are all volunteers, and it is wonderful,” Mrs. Kaminski said.

Rebuilding Together Litchfield County was organized in 2003 and has assisted 240 homeowners. This year the group helped seven homeowners, and in 2021, 21 homeowners were helped. The group focuses on things that make houses safe, warm, and accessible for older people of limited incomes. Skilled craftsmen are assisted by volunteers – both from Rebuilding and the communities they serve.
