TORRINGTON — Price Rite Marketplace and Feed the Children, Pepsi, Alexander & Hornung and United Way officials met at the Torrington Price Rite store recently to distribute food and other items to local families.

According to the United Way, which identified the families in need, more than 800 families received a 25-pound box of food and a box of essentials such as shampoo, lotion and other personal care items, all provided by Price Rite.

Guests included Mayor Elinor Carbone; Chamber of Commerce CEO JoAnn Ryan; state Reps. Jay Case, R-Winsted; Maria Horn, D-Salisbury; and Michelle Cook, D-Torrington; Anthony Afriyie, outreach coordinator; and Gladys Mercado, district aide and senior caseworker, both for the Office of U.S. Rep. John Larson, D-1; Price Rite President Kevin McDonnell, and Joe Allegro, senior director of corporate partnerships for Feed the Children.

“Fighting hunger is at the heart of Price Rite Marketplace’s charitable giving and paired with Feed the Children’s vision to create a world where no child goes to bed hungry, they have created the initiative, Feeding Minds & Bodies,” according to the United Way. “The campaign’s goal is help tackle childhood hunger and promote healthy childhood development by providing food, personal care items, books and school supplies throughout the year.

Price Rite Marketplace and Feed the Children will host eight events throughout 2022.

“With one in six U.S. children living in a food insecure household, hunger remains a serious issue in many communities, especially during summer months,” said McDonnell. “Since the two organizations first began working together in 2015, more than 40,000 families have received the fresh fruit, vegetables and groceries they need to help nourish their families.”
