Fair opens Sept. 30 at Locust Road grounds

HARWINTON — The 165th Harwinton Fair, presented by the Harwinton Agricultur­al Society, opens Friday and continues through Sunday.

“We have a lot of exciting events and activities scheduled for each day of the fair, including antique tractor pulls, horse events, wood chopping contests, animal exhibits, live entertainm­ent, amazing fair food and vendors. The fair will also have agricultur­al displays, kids’ activities and so much more,” members said in a statement.

Visitors can see a classic car show on Friday, along with the Connecticu­t Doodlebugs. Historic reenactors are there all weekend, along with many local bands and other types of entertainm­ent.

Each day will feature live music.

The Bootleg band is set to open the fair Friday, and Delusions of Grandeur willclose out the first day of the fair. The Tradesmen perform Saturday, followed by music by Morgan Skelly & the Old Crowes on Sunday in the gazebo. Other entertainm­ent on Saturday: the Jeff Conlon band at 10 a.m., the HarBur School Band, also at 10 a.m.; Wires and Wood at 11:30 a.m., and the Em & Tom Acoustic Sing Along at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, Connecticu­t’s Old Time Bristol Fiddlers Club performs at 10 a.m., with Horizon Blue Acoustic Band at 11 a.m.

A high school wood chopping contest is set for 5 p.m. Friday, as well as a mini horse pull at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, activities include animal judging, an antique tractor pull at 9 a.m. and a horse show at 9:30 a.m.; the Matica Circus Youth Troupe performs at 10 a.m., and oxen competitio­ns and demonstrat­ions begin at 10 a.m. Pig races, a men’s hay bale toss contest and a women’s skillet throwing contest are also scheduled.

Sunday’s events begin with a garden tractor pull at 9 a.m., followed by a men’s hay bale toss at 10 a.m. and a women’s skillet throw at 1 p.m., a 3-D barrel race at 11:30 a.m., with more pig races and a wood chopping contest in the afternoon.

Hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday; and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. The fairground­s are located on Locust Road in Harwinton, off Route 4. On Friday, general admission is $10 and $30 for wristbands to enjoy the rides all night. Saturday and Sunda, general admission is $10 and children 12 and under are admitted free. Fair parking is also free.
