Six Connecticu­t residents included in Forbes 400 list

Six Connecticu­t residents are listed in the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans that came out Sept. 27 and features the richest men and women in the country.

The six residents in Connecticu­t featured are Ray Dalio, Steve Cohen, Karen Pritzker, Todd Boehly, Brad Jacobs and Stephen Mandel, Jr. Their combined net worth totals $55 billion.

Dalio has the highest net worth out of the six, coming in $19.1 billion. Cohenhas the second highest, with a net worth of $17.5 billion; he also lives in Greenwich.

Out of the six that are featured in Forbes’ 2022 list, all but Boehly were also included in the 2021 list. Boehly made his way in by founding the holding company Eldridge Industries based in Greenwich and also recently became the owner of the profession­al soccer team Chelsea FC. His net worth comes in $5.3 billion.

Forbes also reported that Dalio and Mandel, Jr. saw their net worths decline since 2021 and Pritzker and Jacobs saw their net worths stay the same. Cohen was the only Connecticu­t billionair­e listed who saw an increase in their net worth from 2021.

This year was the first that, “the superrich did not get richer,” since the Great Depression, Forbes noted. This year’s Forbes 400 class

came in $500 billion poorer than the 2021 class, with their total net worth at $4 trillion dollars — down 11 percent from the year before.

Elon Musk came in as Forbes’ richest person in America for the first time in 2022, ending Jeff Bezos’ four-year run at the top. Musk’s estimated net worth is $251 billion, which is over 13 times richer than Dalio, the richest person in Connecticu­t.

Ray Dalio

Ray Dalio is the founder of the Westport-based hedge fund Bridgewate­r Associates — the largest hedge funds firm in the world, according to Forbes. He founded the company 47 years ago. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and is originally from Long Island, N.Y. Dalio has been named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influentia­l People in the

World” and is also the richest person in Connecticu­t. With a net worth of $19.1 billion, he is the 75th richest person in the world right now, according to Forbes. Dalio is 73 years old and married. He has four children and lives in Greenwich.

Steve Cohen

Steve Cohen currently oversees Stamford-based Point72 Asset Management, a $26 billion hedge fund that oversees outside capital. Prior to this, Cohen ran SAC Capital, which Forbes describes as “one of the most successful hedge funds ever.” SAC was forced to shut down in 2018 after the firm pleaded guilty to insider trading charges. Cohen has an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and is also the owner of the New York Mets, which he purchased in 2020 for $2.4 billion. He is the 83rd richest person in the world today, with a net worth of $17.5 billion. Cohen, who is 66, is currently married and has seven children. He lives in Greenwich.

Karen Pritzker

Karen Pritzker is one of 11 Pritzker billionair­e heirs. Her grandfathe­r was A.N. Pritzker, the founder of the industrial conglomera­te Marmon and Hyatt hotels. Pritzker has made her money from investment­s in companies like Apple, in addition to hundreds of private biotech and medical device firms. She has a B.A. from Northweste­rn University and is the 483 richest person in the world today, with a net worth of $5.4 billion. Pritzker, 64, is widowed with four children and resides in Branford.

Todd Bohely

Todd Boehly is the newest addition to Forbes’ 400 Connecticu­t residents this year. Bohely co-founded the holdings company Eldridge in 2015 after serving as president for Guggenheim Partners’ credit business. He has a B.A. from the College of William & Mary. Bohley has a wide range of investment­s, ranging from the Bruce Springstee­n’s song rights to the sports betting company DraftKings, according to Forbes. He personally holds minority stake in both the Los Angeles Lakers and Dodgers, and Eldridge has minority stake in the Dodgers. In May 2022, Bohely purchased profession­al soccer club Chelsea FC for $3.1 billion. Bohely is 49 years old, married and has three children. He currently lives in Darien.

Brad Jacobs

Brad Jacobs created XPO Logistics, a commercial trucking company in 201.Jacobs currently serves as chairman for the company, and it is the main way he achieved his wealth. Jacobs originally went to Brown University, but dropped out of school prior to graduating. In the 1990s he consolidat­ed rural trash hauling, creating United Waste and then selling it to Waste Management for $1.9 billion. He also built the company United Rentals into of the biggest heavy equipment rental company in the world, according to Forbes. Jacobs, with a net worth of $3.9 billion, is the 711th richest person in the world. He is married and has four kids. Jacobs currently resides in Greenwich.

Stephen Mandel, Jr.

Steven Mandel, Jr. started his hedge fund, Lone Pine Capital in 1997. Mandel, Jr. is one of the late hedge fund guru Julian Robertson’s ‘Tiger Cubs.’ In 2019, Mandel, Jr. stepped back from Lone Pine Capital but remains a managing director for the company. He received his MBA from Harvard University. With a net worth of $3.6 billion, Mandel, Jr. is the 753rd richest person in the world, according to Forbes. He is 66 and married with three children. Mandel, Jr. lives in Greenwich.
