Litchfield Historical Society plans spooky storytelli­ng events

LITCHFIELD — The Litchfield Historical Society is preparing for fall with a collection of seasonal events. Registrati­on and entry informatio­n is available at litchfield­historical­society.org, or by calling 860-567-4501.

Opening celebratio­n of Scarecrows in the Meadow, 1-3 p.m. Oct. 15 at Tapping Reeve Meadow, 82 South Street. All are invited to explore the assembly of more than fifty scarecrows, all created by local businesses, non-profits, and families, watch a scarecrow making contest, enjoy fall activities, and vote on their favorite scarecrows. The exhibit continues through October.

The Legend of Sleepy Hallow: Performed by Master Storytelle­r Jonathan Kruk, 5:30-7 p.m., Oct. 19, Tapping Reeve Meadow. Members free, guests pay $10, $25 maximum for a group.

Kruk is renowned for dramatic solo shows of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “A Christmas Carol.” He has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, The TODAY Show, Good Morning America, The Travel Channel, and The National Geographic Channel. According to the New York Times, “His spirited, candlelit one man show has become a fixture of Halloween.” Surrounded by scarecrows, the event will take place outside in the Tapping Reeve Meadow. Participan­ts are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for seating and to dress warmly.

Stories to Keep You Up at Night: Lantern Tours, Oct. 21 or Oct. 25, 5:30-7 p.m., Tapping Reeve Meadow. Members pay $15, guests pay $20. The tour starts at the Tapping Reeve Meadow where we will enjoy historical­ly inspired cocktails and treats before grabbing lanterns and heading into the darkness to learn about the violent and scandalous side of Litchfield’s history. Walking tours will last approximat­ely 1 hour and cover 1 mile. Participan­ts are encouraged to dress warmly and register early; space is limited.
