New Milford, Xavier win tournament­s

Six New Milford wrestlers captured weight class championsh­ips to help the Green Wave dominate its own tournament on Saturday.

New Milford, ranked No. 3 in the Connecticu­t Wrestling Online Poll, won by more than 100 points, scoring 261 with runnerup Norwalk scoring 153. Enfield (145), Stratford (135), and Bethel (79) rounded out the top five.

Green Wave sophomore Alex Oberc wasted little time winning the 106-pound class, scoring pinfalls in under a minute in all three of his matches. He topped Stratford’s Nathan Marshall in 50 seconds in the final.

New Milford seniors Khalil Bourjelli (160), Chayten Prashant (182) and Tynam Lim (132), junior Ryder Langlois (145) and sophomore Brennan Botelho (152) also won weight class titles. Bourjelli and Prashant won all three matches via pins.

Norwalk also a force

While the Green Wave won the team title, Norwalk was also a force at the New Milford Tournament, as the runner-up Bears won five weight classes.

Norwalk champs included senior co-captains and twins Brendan and Ryan Gilchrist at 195 and 170 pounds, respective­ly, along with juniors Phoenix Gardella (126) and Nick Fatone (138) and sophomore Ryan Laing (113).

Other champs at the New Milford tournament were Bethel’s Jerry Hill (120), Stratford’s James Duhancik (220) and Keonta Crawford (285).

Xavier wins Colter Abely Midseason Classic

After traveling to Wisconsin and Maryland the past two weekends, Xavier stayed home in Connecticu­t and won the Colter Abely Midseason Classic Saturday at Mercy.

The No. 1-ranked Falcons, who won four individual titles, scored 359 to won over Chelmsford (MA), which was runner-up with 338. Bishop Hendricken (RI) was third with 288.5, with Newtown (280) and East Hartford (274) in the top five.

The Falcons’ individual winners were senior Matthew Ferrucci (152), juniors Raekwon Shabazz (106) and Kyle Levesque (132), and freshman Braylon Gonzalez (113).

No. 5 East Hartford also had four weight class champs in junior Sammy Montovani (195) and sophomores Isaac Quiles (120), Jaeckez Mendez (138) and Drayvn Roberts (160).

Newtown junior Fisher Stites gave the Nighthawks a win at 170 pounds.

Southingto­n delivers at Timberlane Tournament

Southingto­n delivered a strong performanc­e at the Timberlane Tournament in New Hampshire finishing as a close runner-up behind the host team.Timberline scored 173 points, with Southingto­n scoring 165.5.

The Blue Knights had three weight class winners in the middle weights: Seniors Jared Mangiafico (126) and Colton Thorpe (132), and junior Josh Howard (138)
