Up to 10 inches of snow possible in parts of CT Monday night

Northwest Connecticut could see 5 to 10 inches of snowfall, with lower amounts expected in Hartford County and along the shoreline, Monday into Tuesday, National Weather Service reports said.

“Snow events have been few and far between this year so I suspect people are going to be annoyed,” said Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines with AccuWeather, who predicted a messy Tuesday morning commute throughout most areas of the state.

The shoreline will see the least amount of snow, Kines said, while the center of the state could get two to five inches with places to the north and west, including Torrington, seeing six to eight inches, he said.

Conditions should improve quickly Tuesday as temperatures rise changing any snow to rain, he said. Later in the week there could be more snow, he said.

“March is usually a fickle month and I suspect this March won’t be any different,” Kines said.

Much of the state saw foggy conditions Sunday morning after one to two inches of snow Saturday and a drop in temperatures into the teens.

Sunday is expected to be cloudy with a chance of snow or rain moving through during the afternoon, NWS forecasters said.

Clouds will increase Monday with snow expected to blanket much of the state after 9 p.m., forecasters said. Southern portions of the state and the Hudson Valley area could get the higher snow totals while Hartford County could see two to four inches by Tuesday morning, the NWS said.

A winter storm watch is in effect for Litchfield County where snow totals could reach 5 to 10 inches by Tuesday morning, the NWS said.

The New Haven area is expected to see three to five inches of snow Monday night into Tuesday with a snow and rain mix Tuesday morning, the NWS said.

An additional inch of snow could fall in the Hartford Tuesday morning. The shoreline will likely see less snow and more rain, forecasters said.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny with highs in the mid-40s, the NWS said.
