Focus on real issues

Our new legislative session has begun, and we are seeing the proposal of various laws that serve no real purpose other than to garner some publicity for some of our lawmakers.

One proposal is to name pizza the official food of Connecticut, and while I enjoy pizza, I think there are other foods consumed by state residents that enjoy just as much popularity, and the only ones who care about naming it the official food would be the pizza maker’s lobby. Maybe the kielbasa people should get involved.

Another proposal is to ban the use of the term Latinx. Now the first time I heard this was when I read the article and since then I have questioned some of my friends and nobody that I know knew this term or cared, but the legislators will waste a fair amount of time debating this so a few of them can capture some good publicity.

A third proposal is to make voting mandatory. We have a record number of wrong-way drivers and fatalities, shootings are up in all the cities, catalytic converters are still being stolen, car thieves wearing ankle monitors are captured during the theft of a vehicle and released to the custody of their parents, but some bright legislators want to fine you for not voting. Will we be sending the state police house to house to arrest the nonvoters? Will there be random stops and checkpoints to catch the culprits? We should hit the old folks’ homes and get all of those nonvoters and lock them up.

If you want to pass a law that makes voting mandatory, then the ballot should also include, “None of the Above.”

There is a need for serious legislation to protect the citizens of the state, so stop the nonsense and get to work.
