FISH holds annual ‘tasteful’ fundraiser
TORRINGTON — In spite of chilly winds and cool temperatures, “A Tasteful Event” fundraiser for the FISH shelter and food pantry drew more than 250 people for an evening of food and drinks provided by local restaurants and businesses.
The party was held under tents outdoors at the Five Points Arts Center on University Drive, former home of the UConn Torrington campus.
Since Five Points Gallery purchased the property in June 2020, it has become a venue for outdoor celebrations and fundraisers. The center’s print arts festival opens June 3.
FISH Executive Director Deirdre DiCara was pleased with the turnout.
“It was a huge success and demonstrated community caring at its best, helping FISH / Friends in Service to Humanity of Northwestern Connecticut Inc. as they do the vital work serving the homeless and those facing food insecurity,” she said.
Restaurants and business participating in the event were @ the Corner, Ciesco Catering, Litchfield Distillery, the Nutmeg Fudge Co., Noujaim’s Mediterranean Bistro and Catered by Gia. A baked potato food truck was a popular stop for guests. DJ Jacque Williams provided music and announcements for the crowd.
“It’s incredible when you have the support of the community,” said FISH board president Steve Caruso, as he greeted guests in the arts center lobby, where people checked in and headed to the raffle table to take a chance on dozens of donated gift certificates and services from local businesses.
“The best thing I ever did was get involved with FISH,” he said. “When you think about the weather and how cold it is, still, sometimes at night, it’s hard to think of people who are homeless. The shelter is always full.”
