Tabora Cafe is Business of the Month

LANSDALE — The newest borough business of the month is one that has made a big investment in Lansdale, starting with an appearance every Saturday morning.

Tabora Cafe and its owner Caleb Torrice were recognized by the borough’s Economic Development Committee Monday night, for five years of involvement and two years of a storefront in town.

“Caleb’s history in Lansdale goes back to the summer of 2009 when the Lansdale Farmers Market opened. Caleb was, and still is, a driving force behind the market and its tremendous success here in town,” borough Mayor Andy Szekely said.

On Monday night Szekely presented the monthly EDC award to Torrice, and thanked him for opening a second branch in 2012 to complement Tabora Farm and Orchard, which he and wife Trish opened in Chalfont, Bucks County, 20 years ago.

“I know that Caleb has invested substantially into 209 W. Main St., which in turn has been an investment in Lansdale,” said Szekely.

Tabora offers a full-service bakery, deli, spice shop and winery along with free Internet access and bottomless coffee cups at their location on Main Street, in addition to their fresh fruit, vegetables and gift baskets available at their Chalfont location and the seasonal goods sold Saturdays at their farmers market stand. Szekely joked as he handed Torrice the Lansdale award “if you hang it in Chalfont, it spontaneously disintegrates.”

EDC chair Mary Fuller said she “can personally attest, I think I’ve worked through most of the items on the menu” at the Lansdale location, and EDC Vice Chair Richard Strahm also thanked Torrice for hosting a reception for borough officials after the unveiling of the facade at 311 W. Main St. on June 6.

During the EDC meeting, Strahm gave an update on the 311 Arts facade unveiling and work of that facility’s steering committee, which he said will likely appoint a new member in the next month and continues to lay the groundwork for a capital campaign to raise money for rehabilitating the rest of the building.

EDC also reported on several incoming businesses that have received permits to open within the borough, and Fuller announced a SEPTA townhall meeting for public feedback on their proposed plans for a garage behind the Lansdale Train Station will be held at 7 p.m. on June 25 at the borough Parks and Recreation building, 660 E. Lansdale Avenue.
