Upper Gwynedd commissioners recap
October 23 Giant site
Plan approved: Upper Gwynedd’s commissioners have approved a plan Monday to subdivide the site of the former Giant supermarket on Sumneytown Pike at Church Road into three smaller lots. “The ball is back in their court to take the next step, and we’ll see what they do next,” said Township Manager Len Perrone. For the past two years, the site of the future supermarket has been in question, after the supermarket closed in early 2015 and plans were proposed for a Royal Farms fuel station and convenience store, surrounded by a hotel in early versions of the plans, then a series of retail buildings in later plans. Earlier this month the developer behind the project proposed a new plan, which would subdivide the larger 4.5-acre parcel into three roughly equal parcels of between 1.2 and 1.9 acres, to allow for different individual uses on each. The subdivision plan was vetted by the township’s planning commission in early October, discussed by the commissioners last week, and approved unanimously by the commissioners, according to Perrone.
Veteran Banners
Moving ahead: The commissioners also announced and approved Upper Gwynedd’s participation in the local “Hometown Heroes” program, to honor local veterans with decorative banners. The program began in Lansdale last year, when a request to install 48 banners on utility poles around town grew into more than 400 by the end of the year, and 500 were approved for Lansdale in 2017. The program has also grown to include decorative banners in Hatfield and North Wales, and last week Upper Gwynedd’s board heard a proposal to hang similar banners on 32 utility poles at the township’s Parkside Place municipal complex.
