Power plant returns to service after refueling
Generating station undergoes refueling operation
Unit 1 of Exelon Generation’s Limerick Generating station has been returned to full power following a scheduled refueling.
Operators returned Unit 1 to service Friday evening, completing the maintenance that began March 26. While refueling outage lengths vary at Limerick and across the industry, the Limerick Unit 1 refueling outage was completed on schedule, according to an Exelon spokeswoman.
The planned maintenance and inspections performed during the 26-day outage included major upgrades to the main turbine and generator systems. The work will help ensure reliability during peak summer demand, according to a press release. The outage was required to support two years of operation for the reactor.
Approximately 800 Limerick employees and more than 1,500 contract workers of various electrical, mechanical and construction disciplines performed detailed inspections, equipment upgrades and maintenance that can only be completed when the reactor is offline.
During the Unit 1 refueling out-
age, Limerick Unit 2 continued to generate electricity.
At full power, the facility’s two generating units produce more than 2,300 megawatts of electricity, enough to power
more than 2 million typical American homes and businesses.
