Blazers sweep Allentown to reach championship round
The fourth-seeded Quakertown Blazers defeated the top seed Allentown Railers twice in a doubleheader by scores of 5-2 and 6-4 at ECTB Stadium Sunday to advance to the championship round of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL) playoffs.
The Blazers face the No. 3 Jersey Pilots Monday in a doubleheader at Drew University. The Pilot topped North Jersey 8-7 Sunday.
In Sunday’s opener against Allentown, Quakertown’s Jimmy Kingsbury (Villanova) allowed one run over seven innings for the win in the opener as C.J. Kilgarriff ( Jefferson) picked up the save. Nathan Sides (Alvernia) had two doubles with three RBIs to top the Blazers offense. Andrew Cossetti (Saint Joseph’s) added two hits and an RBI.
In Game 2, the Railers jumped
off to a 4-0 lead, but the Blazers scored six unanswered runs in innings three through seven to
gain a 6-4 edge. Quinn McKenna (Lehigh) and Jeff Manto (Villanova) both hit two-run home runs to set the pace. Ben Werkheiser (Delaware) contributed two hits also.
J.J. Spherley (Bloomsburg) went seven innings
for the win in the nightcap while Matt Svanson ( Lehigh) pitched two scoreless innings for the save.
Shayne Fontana (Lynn) and Charles Barebo (DeSales) had four and three hits respectively for the Railers in the doubleheader.
