PJM donates to hurricane relief efforts

PJM Interconne­ction, the nation’s largest power grid operator, has announced that it is donating $20,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Florence relief efforts.

In addition, PJM will also match its employees’ donations to Florence relief programs.

“Our thoughts are with those impacted by this historic flooding,” Nora Swimm, senior vice president, corporate client services said in a press release. “Florence impacted millions of Americans, including customers served by our member companies in North Carolina and Virginia, but PJM’s culture of caring extends far beyond our physical footprint. We are grateful our contributi­on can help people throughout the East Coast recover from this catastroph­ic event.”

PJM Interconne­ction, which is based in Lower Providence, works “behind the scenes” to coordinate the movement of electricit­y in all or parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia. Among the member companies are PECO, MetEd, PPL Corp., PSE&G and Delmarva Power.

Over the last three weeks, the Red Cross has mobilized more than 3,500 disaster workers. The Red Cross and other organizati­ons reported providing more than 113,000 overnight stays in emergency shelters to date and serving nearly 900,000 meals and snacks, according to the release. The Red Cross has also distribute­d more than 110,000 relief items for people forced from their homes.

Employees of PJM contribute time and donations to many programs in the community. During 2017, PJM employees donated $150,000 to area nonprofit organizati­ons. In addition, employees volunteere­d more than 2,200 hours at local homeless shelters, food banks, schools, recreation centers and parks, helping to improve the lives of people in their communitie­s, the release stated.

PJM Interconne­ction, founded in 1927, ensures the reliabilit­y of the highvoltag­e electric power system serving 65 million people in all or parts of Dela-

ware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvan­ia, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

PJM coordinate­s and directs the operation of the region’s transmissi­on grid, which includes more than 84,042 miles of transmissi­on lines; administer­s a competitiv­e wholesale electricit­y market; and plans regional transmissi­on expansion improvemen­ts to maintain grid reliabilit­y and relieve congestion.
