Indians open with win over Knights
Martin’s 3 goals help Souderton hold off North Penn
A fast start on a cold and rainy night helped the Souderton boys lacrosse team earned a season-opening victory.
After the host Indians jumped out to a 6-1 lead 52 seconds into the second quarter, North Penn cut the margin to two at halftime but Big Red held off the Knights in the second half and got a few key saves from goalkeeper Axell Beskar in the fourth to claim a 9-6 SOL non-conference win Friday night.
Walker Martin finished with game-high three goals while Cole Witoslawski and Jalen White both scored twice for Souderton (1-0). Martin also assisted on the Indians’ final goal, finding Stephen Blue for a strike at 8:22 in the fourth to make it 9-6.
Souderton led by five twice in the second quarter, the last time at 7-2 on Witoslawski’s tally at 8:20 before North Penn (1-0) scored the half’s final three goals.
Conor Young scored off a Stephen Rinck assist at 8:11 with Lucas Yannul’s goal at 3:21 made it 7-4. Young’s second strike with 67 seconds left before halftime had the Knights within 7-5.
Souderton regained the threegoal lead early in the third quarter, Dylan Anderson scoring at 9:45 after the Indians forced a turnover. The Knights cut the margin back down to two at 2:23 in the third as Rinck sent the ball towards the net and took a deflected and found its way into the goal. North Penn looked to pull closer in the fourth but couldn’t solve Beskar while Blue’s strike off a Martin assist gave Big Red a three-goal cushion.
Souderton is back in action Monday as it visits Neshaminy 3:30 p.m. Monday. North Penn is
home Tuesday against Boyertown
at 3:45 p.m.
Martin collected Friday’s first goal at 10:38 with Witoslawski corralling a rebound and sending it into the back of the net at 9:02
to double the Indians’ advantage.
Matt Dickson pulled the Knights to within 2-1 at 6:19 but White answered to make it 3-1 at 4:12 with the Indians scoring twice in the final minute – Martin first with 34.7 seconds with White’s goal at 6.5 seconds making it 6-1 Souderton.
