SOL TITLES ON THE LINE
CB West can clinch Continental crown with win over Souderton
The Suburban One League Continental Conference and National Conference champions could be crowned this week.
In the Continental, CB West sits in first place at 5-0 while North Penn and Souderton are 3-1. West plays its final league game Friday night at Souderton at 7 p.m. West would clinch an outright league title with a win or Big Red could create a three-team tie atop the standings.
In the National, Abington travels to Pennsbury for a 7 p.m. matchup Friday night. Abington is 5-0 and Pennsbury 4-0.
The American Conference has a tight race at the top with Cheltenham at 4-0 and Plymouth Whitemarsh 3-1. The Panthers already beat the Colonials head-tohead and close their season with home games against Upper Moreland (2-2) and Wissahickon (1-4).
Grandy a pleasant surprise
A lot of things went wrong for North Penn when it lost its first league game in five years Friday night to Central Bucks West, 27-26, at War Memorial Field.
The Knights fumbled in big spots, missed tackles and made mental errors that resulted in them falling behind the Bucks in the Suburban One League Continental Conference standings.
Kenneth Grandy was a bright spot on a night North Penn would like to leave in the past.
Grandy scored a pair of touchdowns. He ran one in from seven yards away in the first quarter to cut the Knights deficit to 13-7 and he caught a 53-yard score down the middle of the field in the third quarter to give his side a 26-20 lead.
Grandy finished the game with 114 receiving yards on four catches and 10 rushing yards on two attempts.
Exceptional Explorers
La Salle freshman running back Mao Howell has four touchdowns over the last three weeks (loss against St. Joe’s Prep and wins against Father Judge and Archbishop Ryan). He caught two touchdowns, ran one and returned a kickoff. He has 84 rushing yards and 42 receiving yards in the last three contests.
In the last two games, La Salle has only received three kickoffs. Howell’s score was an 89-yard return. He took another 67 yards and the other went out of bounds.
Three of Explorers wide receiver Rob Tatum’s last four catches have gone for first downs. Two of those drives ended with touchdowns.
Dresnin approaching milestone
Plymouth Whitemarsh running back Brian Dresnin entered Friday’s game against Quakertown needing 183 rushing yards to reach 1,000 on the season.
He scored a pair of touchdowns, but totaled just 63 yards on the ground. He averaged nearly eight yards per carry, toting the rock just eight times in a game that was 42-0 early in the third quarter.
Dresnin will try to reach the milestone Friday against Upper Dublin. He needs 120 yards.
Spartans on fire
Springfield picked up its third straight win Friday, 55-20, over Morrisville.
Gabe Franczyk had a dominant game for the Spartans. The junior quarterback ran for 129 yards and five touchdowns while throwing for 74 yards and another score.
Andrew Yi and Cam Dennis each caught touchdowns. Yi scored from 15 yards out on his only catch of the day and Dennis totaled 16 yards on three grabs.
It was Springfield’s second 50-point performance in three weeks. The team is averaging 47.6 points per game during its threegame winning streak.
