The next phase of the township’s long-planned sewer diversion project is coming soon and will affect traffic.

UPPER GWYNEDD The next phase of the township’s long-planned sewer diversion project is coming soon and could mean lane restrictions on another busy street.

Township Manager Sandra Brookley Zadell gave an update Monday night on the latest movement on the township’s Wastewater Improvement Program and next steps coming soon.

“Right now, this week, during the week of February 24th, pipe-laying operations are continuing along Garfield Avenue, between Broad Street and West Point Pike,” Zadell said.

Construction started in December on the “Wastewater

Improvement Program,” which will send sewer flow that had gone to a treatment plant in Towamencin to the township’s plant near Township

Line Road. A $10.7 million construction contract was awarded last August, property acquisitions finished in September and October, then work started in

December as a new township website went live with details, maps and updates. In January Zadell gave an update of the second phase work on Garfield Avenue, before describing the upcoming third phase during the board’s Feb. 24 meeting.

Zadell said that traffic detours put in place for the Garfield Avenue work will continue to divert traffic up and down Park Road until that work is complete.

The third phase of the diversion project looks likely to begin in early March, and will cross over West Point Pike and include work along Moyer Boulevard.

Residents in the affected area have been notified of a public meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on March 3, to discuss the project with staff, hear the latest updates and ask any questions. Residents in that section have also been notified to pack their patience, since lanes will likely be closed on Moyer while the work is underway.

“Garfield was closed during construction, but Moyer Boulevard will be one lane at all times, and it will be flagged,” said the manager.

“In this section, the contractor will be working from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. They’ve spoken to the (North Penn) school district, and the district transportation director thanked us for the wonderful communication regarding this project,” Zadell said.

Staff and construction contractor PACT One have also been in contact with businesses along the phase three route, Zadell said, similarly to how meetings were held with Merck as work went past their facilities on Garfield Avenue.

Upper Gwynedd’s commissioners next meet at 7 p.m. on March 9 at the township administration building, 1 Parkside Place.
