Upper Moreland keeps rolling with win

Steamrolling towards the playoffs, Upper Moreland resembles a train with no foreseeable stops.

“We’re not gonna slow down,” Eric Damico said. “Everyone’s hitting well.”

The Falcons had the bats going again in the regular-season finale Thursday night, as the top team in Bux-Mont Connie Mack put together some timely hits, took advantage of some Deep Run miscues, and got another solid start on the mound from Greg Wiley in pulling away to a 7-0 victory.

Upper Moreland raised its record to a league-best 17-1, having already locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming league tournament. Deep Run (10-7-1), playing well down the stretch, will be the No. 3 seed in the postseason.

“Greg was starting and we got a good first inning on the mound. We came out and hit early,” said Damico, a rising junior at Central Bucks South.

EARLY BURST » Deep Run had some uncharacteristic mistakes in the bottom of the first, making three costly errors.

Upper Moreland took advantage, a two-run single by Damico contributing to a 5-0 jump.

“My first at-bat, I swung early, got a good hit. I was aggressive,” Damico said. “It felt good.”

That is all the Falcons would need, as Wiley blanked Deep Run in his three innings of work.

“The pitching and defense is staying solid,” Damico said.

The Falcons padded their lead with a run in the third and another in the fifth.

Upper Moreland draws No. 8 Harleysville (6-10-1 going into Thursday) in the first round while Deep Run gets ready for a showdown with No. 6 Doylestown (8-10).

“It’s been pretty good —a lot of wins,” Damico said of this summer. “We just keep hitting and keep pitching.

“We’re ready for (the tournament), good to go.”
