Finding ‘Joy’ in the journey

- J.R. Damiani Columnist Pastor J.R. Damiani is the founding pastor of Family Worship Center, 1000 Troxell Road, Lansdale.

A pastor told of a time recently when he parked next to a businessman in a parking garage. The man had an expensive sports car and the pastor commented on the beauty of the car. The man’s reply was an insight into the American way, “well, it helps me to forget my troubles for a few minutes.” Symbolism over substance — outwardly impressive, inwardly empty and barren — seeking joy that is evasive and slippery. It slips through the fingers because it is based on nothing.

I’m talking to people today who need more than a few minutes of relief. You want real Joy and I can tell you where to find it. That’s a fact! We are surrounded by a society that will go to any expense and great lengths to find happiness and joy. Bottom line: it’s only in doing the will of the Father that we can have Joy in the journey.

Jesus set the example in John 5:30 “I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me.”

The Joy of the Lord is what causes salvation to change from endurance to a joyous relationship. You’ll learn the meaning of Joy unspeakable and full of Glory. In Isaiah 12:3 the prophet says, “with Joy shall you draw waters out of the wells of salvation”. The Hebrew speaks of being drunk with Joy — overflowing. In John 17:13 Jesus prayed “that they may have My Joy fulfilled in themselves.” His Joy. You talk about name brands!

That’s the brand that I want — His Joy. I challenge you, young person. I challenge you, skeptic. Show me something better and I’ll buy it. He’s not talking about a passing emotion that comes from circumstances or entertainment or therapy. That’s not the real stuff — that’s halfbaked. It leaves you with a guilt trip, big time, and so miserable you can’t stand yourself much less anyone else. I’m not talking happiness or the rush that comes from drugs or drink or even from the applause of the crowd. The Joy of the Lord doesn’t ride on the crest of emotion or performance. No way! Real Joy is the same at the graveside as it is at the fireside. Real Joy doesn’t panic in the presence of the enemy.

Joy is perfected in a Person. His Name is Jesus. Be available to serve Him fully! He will give you the strength no matter how hard it seems. Joy is maintained by abiding in Him. He is the example that I want to follow.
