Wentz, WR Reagor banged up at Eagles camp
Just two weekends from the opener, the Eagles are short two more key players, quarterback Carson Wentz nursing a lower body injury, sensational rookie wide receiver Jalen Reagor a shoulder issue.
The Eagles quietly believe Wentz has a routine soft tissue injury and is day to day. However, Wentz didn’t complete the Saturday practice, nor did he participate in an intra-squad scrimmage Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
Reagor, the first round pick out of TCU, hurt his shoulder tackling safety Will Parks, who picked off rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts. Cornerback Avonte Maddox smothered Reagor and tipped the ball to Parks.
Reagor had to leave the field and is slated to undergo an MRI.
With Wentz ailing, Nate Sudfeld took on the first-team snaps while Hurts got much of the second-team work. Wide receiver Greg Ward, a standout quarterback at the University of Houston, busted out his arm to help the Eagles get through the warmups.
This isn’t a good time for Wentz to be nursing an injury. With Matt Pryor at left tackle and Jordan Mailata on the other side, the latter because tackle Lane Johnson is out with a lower body injury, Sudfeld had a tough time getting the ball away against the firstteam defense in the competitive 11-on-11 team drills.
Later in practice Sudfeld connected with rookie receiver John Hightower on a 70-yard score, the quarterback getting the ball up and over the defense of Maddox and Jalen Mills with no issue.
Wentz would have had tough time being productive Sunday judging by the leaks in the line. Veteran Jason Peters, the career left tackle, remained at right guard, where the Eagles are trying to weather the loss of All-Pro right guard Brandon Brooks to a torn Achilles’ tendon.
Wentz’s injury history includes torn ACL and PCL ligaments late in the 2017 season, a stress fracture in his back in
2018 and last year a concussion that sidelined him early in the Eagles’ playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Reagor, who has been running with the first team most of camp, might have a tough time being ready for the opener Sept. 13 against the Washington Football Team at FedEx Field.
The Eagles already were playing without rookie receiver Quez Watkins (lower body).
Defensive end Derek Barnett (ankle) didn’t practice. The next time defensive tackle Javon Hargrave (pectoral muscle) gets on the field will be the first time he’s done so at training camp.
