The values of truth and justice are in jeopardy

-

Truth, justice and the American way. Do you remember those words? Those were the values that Superman stood for and they were things we used to believe in. Then came Trump and he decided we didn’t need any of those things.

Truth was the first one to go, and as of July 13, Trump has told over 20,000 lies to the American people, according to the Washington Post which has been keeping close track since the inauguration. His minions have followed in his footsteps and mouthed many, many more.

Then came justice and it took a little longer to see how it would be perverted but with the appointment of incompetent federal judges to lifetime posts across the country and then, with the appointment of William Barr as Attorney General, we have lost the second of the three values and can expect only partisan decisions and dishonorable miscarriages of justice until this administration ends.

The American way has been, until now, the lodestar we all looked to as we defined ourselves to the world. Decency, equal rights under the law, tolerance, fairness, respect for our allies, concern for one another,, bravery, care for the less fortunate, generosity, openness to the refugee and those seeking safety from oppression, a love of family and of country. The American way is all of these qualities and so many more. Unfortunately, they all lie bleeding in the road right now, victims of the onslaught of our current president’s new set of vicious replacements.

I don’t know how long it will take us to recover our better selves, if ever.
